Dove season opens with favorable weather across Nipomo and Santa Maria

Warm weather over the weekend boosts expectations for opening day with plentiful doves on the Nipomo Mesa and Santa Maria River bottom. California fish and game splits the state into two zones for waterfowl with diverse dates and limits. northern hunters get an 86 day season through January 11 while the south earns a 77 day split.

Sprinter Tommie Smith Fails in Bengals Tryout

Speed star Tommie Smith did not win a spot with the Cincinnati Bengals this season as coach Paul Brown released seven players including Smith. Prep grid drills underway today at Lompoc and Cabrillo

High school football in the fall season began with first official workouts at Lompoc and Cabrillo high schools. Coaches Jim Spruill and Evert Jones reported strong turnout expectations, with 81 and 54 varsity players respectively plus sizable freshman groups. Both squads emphasized conditioning, attitude, and readiness, as Lompoc hosts Hueneme and Cabrillo travels to Santa Ynez on opening night.

Allison sparks Twins win with bunt and triple

Bob Allison delivers a bases loaded triple for three RBIs and bunts home a run as the Twins beat Cleveland 7-5. Other AL results see Boston, Baltimore, Washington, New York and Detroit winning. NL leaders include Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, San Francisco, St. Louis and San Diego. Also notes on a harness track exacta payout and a youth football clinic set for September.

Davis extends Dodgers streak in win over Mets

Willlie Davis extended his hitting streak to 29 as the Dodgers beat the Mets 10 6. The win kept Los Angeles a half game behind San Francisco in the Western Division while Chicago and other rivals won. Lunn wins Hartford Open in four hole playoff

Bob Lunn the 24 year old Sacramento golfer won the Greater Hartford Open after a four hole sudden death playoff over Dave Hill. Lunn clinched with a 15 foot birdie at the 15th hole while Hill missed from 25 feet. Hill had birdied 17 and 18 to force the playoff.

Pepitone Reinstated by Yankees After Public Apology

Joe Pepitone, 28, returns to the New York Yankees after a three day suspension for abandoning the club. He explains low spirits due to false financial stories, apologizes to teammates, the press, and the public, and denies Mafia loan shark involvement. He was fined 500 dollars and reinstated following a meeting with Michael Burke and Ralph Houk.
