Fighting rages in Ecuador coup at the presidential palace
Rebels led by Commander Raul Gonzales seized the palace after a near half day battle but were surrounded by loyalist forces led by President Guillermo Rodriguez Lara. About 220 presidential guards and 100 paratroopers fought from midnight, with rebels eventually entering the building before loyal troops closed in.

Infant struck by car in critical condition
A two year old boy remains in critical condition at Marian Hospital after being struck by a car while crossing Chestnut Avenue near B Street. James Wendell Ellis 51 of Princeton Place drove the car. The boy was taken to Lompoc Hospital then Marian in intensive care. Police report the incident occurred around 2 35 p m Saturday. A Torrance mother and two children were injured in a separate crash on Highway 246 at Ballard Canyon Road.
