Freeway Lead Pollution Far Exceeds Standards
A Crocker Nuclear Laboratory UC Davis study for the California Air Resources Board finds lead pollution near Southern California freeways far exceeds state standards. Lead levels 300 feet downwind were about seven times the limit, with two-thirds of particulate pollution attributed to vehicle emissions and 37 percent of gasoline lead exiting as air pollution. Weather and freeway design influence concentrations.

County outlines steps for planning contract and public input
The county should approve all general plan sub-contractors to ensure qualifications and hire additional planning staff. Population projections must balance economics and environment with realistic growth. Citizen input via area advisory committees and public hearings is urged, with surveys early in the process. The consultants must avoid predetermining land use and phased work should be county reviewed before each next phase.
