A rising group of California congressmen including House Majority Whip John McFall and several Democrats call for impeachment over President Nixon’s firing of Archibald Cox. McFall reversed his stance saying defying courts justifies impeachment, while Jerome Waldie and others insist Congress has no choice. McCloskey vows to introduce another impeachment resolution amid other political fallout.

Planners warned about two bills at California conference

Preston Hotchkiss of Bisby Ranch warned county planning commissioners at Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel that state and federal land use bills would reshape community life. He cited the Priola bill for a state land use commission and a Jackson bill for grant money to plan nationwide. Hotchkiss warned of growing demand to regulate development and conserve resources while others fear restrictive limits and overreach. He noted a broader challenge from a changing value system and urged attention to energy use and economic impacts.
