City Council discusses business license amendments in study session

Last night’s meeting continued the public hearing with two council members absent. John Cargasacchi urged a per unit fee for rental units and questioned the $30 minimum tax while defending exemptions for seniors and hobbyists. City Attorney Longtin noted out of town vendors cannot be charged higher, and the council plans another study session to review the proposals.

Ford predicts improved Vietnam situation and draft end

House Republican Leader Gerald Ford said the Vietnam war would improve enough in coming months to allow Congress to consider abolishing the draft and moving to an all volunteer army. He noted progress toward ending the war and a reduced need for troops, with a goal of reaching 2.6 million armed forces.

New FCI Warden Kenton Outlines Prison Reform Plans

Frank F. Kenton, 56, former Bureau of Prisons official, takes over as warden of FCI north of Lompoc. He advocates humane treatment, work furloughs, and expanding trade and educational opportunities to reduce reoffending and keep prisons accountable to the public. Kenton cites experience across multiple federal facilities and calls for community involvement in prison policy.

Tax Board approves reductions in Lompoc Valley cases

County Board of Equalization cut assessments in 10 of 15 appeals totaling over 913000 in market value. Ralph T. Lewis at 315 E Ocean Ave saw value drop from 209800 to 173500 on Santa Rita Road amid 25 percent claimed over assessment. Irma L. Wilson’s ranch in Lompoc Valley reduced from 223000 to 212000. Attorney Eugene Huseman represented both.

Zodiac killer calls San Francisco talk show on air

San Francisco authorities and attorney Melvin Belli confirmed a caller claiming to be the Zodiac killer spoke by telephone to Belli and to host Jim Dunbar on KGO TV. Police said the caller, identified as Sam, made multiple calls and claimed mental distress while noting notes of five killings. Ballistics linked four weapons to four murders and a knife to another.

Lompoc Valley Set For 28 Hour United Fund Telethon

A 28 hour telethon to benefit the United Fund in Lompoc Valley runs from 4 p.m. Saturday to 7 p.m. Sunday on Channel 8. Twenty eight hosts will guide two hour segments with live and taped acts, guests, stunts and interviews while a four line telephone bank handles donations. A large fish bowl in the lobby invites in person gifts and televised or interviewed contributions. Local officials Mayor Robert MacClure and Supervisor Francis Beattie join UF leaders Mike Siminski and William Organ in opening remarks.
