Lompoc high school runners finish second with 72 points behind Crescenta Valley 62. Bobby Nunez wins 9:54 in the open race as Scott Coe 10:08 and Tom Denton 5 goals lead a strong showing. Freshman division also yields a second place for Lompoc as Cabrillo performances spark the day.
Lompoc American Legion Judo Dojo finished third in the team competition at the eighth annual Santa Maria Regional Judo Tournament. Jimmy Johnston won the Yonen Advanced group with a 2-0-1 record. Lenard Shepard placed second in Senior Brown Belt. Bruce McKenzie and Al Navarro earned third in Yonen Novice and Shonen Novice respectively. Regular practice continues at the Dojo behind the Memorial Building on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Heisman hopeful Tony Dorsett ran 35 times for 227 yards and three touchdowns as Pittsburgh, hampered by quarterback injuries, dominated Miami of Florida 36 19. Tom Yewcic added 341 offensive yards while Dorsett posted his 14th straight 100 yard game and sixth 200 yard game, as Pitt forced nine turnovers and Majors praised the team's performance. The top 10 slate saw Michigan, Nebraska, UCLA, Oklahoma, Maryland, Iowa State, Ohio State, Texas Tech win while USC rested.
The Lompoc Marlins Swim Clubentered 25 swimmers at the Paso Robles Invitational and earned 44 individual medals along with three relay awards. The girls open 200 medley relay team of Colleen Feeley Kim Foster Judy Walton and Suzanne Whitney won in 2 20.0 while Dave Wayte placed in the top five in two events for the boys 6-under division with a 3rd in 25 free and 2nd in 25 breast.
In a close contest Lom-Garcia nails a 33 yard field goal at 9 42 of the second quarter and later adds a 32 yard field goal at 4 58 in the fourth after a 52 yard drive. SM-Domingues and SM-McGill make key plays including a 19 yard run and a fumble recovery in the end zone.
CAB drives for 59 yards in 4 plays as A Grande opens with a 1 yard TD run at 10 13 Ist. Holt adds a 1 yard TD at 5 52 Ist after a 64 yard drive. Crummy returns a fumble 90 yards for a score at 0 59 Ist. Holt adds a 28 yard TD at 8 35 2nd. Avillanoza Bowser connect for a 20 yard pass and two points at 4 09 3rd. Adame seals with a 5 yard run at 0 20 3rd after a 73 yard drive.
In Saturday results from the Lompoc Youth Football League Pee Wee division the Lions beat the Packers 45 to 23. Scott contributed to the Lions offense with key plays.
Santa Ynez Valley High earned a 21-14 victory over Atascadero as Russ Moir threw to Scott Foss for a late score with 18 seconds left. Moir, Hanson, Hanly and Murphy starred as the Pirates improved to 3-1-1 and 1-0 in the Los Padres League.
IOC president Lord Killanin announced after weeklong talks with world sports federations that retroactive sanctions against Montreal political actions would harm athletes and that new rules are needed. Both groups agreed on reviewing and strengthening IOC rules for future events and stressed minimal discussion of Montreal issues like Taiwan's entry and the African boycott.
