UPI reports the Soviet Union agrees with the United States to allow at least 60 000 Jews and others to emigrate annually. Senator Henry M Jackson says the pact includes visa expansion, removal of an emigration tax, and faster passage of the omnibus trade bill granting the USSR most favored nation status.

Ford signs compromise Turkey aid bill to Dec 10

President Ford signed a compromise measure to extend U S military aid to Turkey until December 10 if Turkey avoids sending weapons to Cyprus. He voiced serious reservations about the deal after Congress twice blocked stronger bills, accepting the plan to allow federal spending at prior rates pending new appropriations.

Ford signs bill to finance 7.75 billion for housing

Frederick Kling, attorney for Cal-Pac Recreational operator of Zaca Lake Resort, says he learned of two bribery offers July 27 and withheld information until Aug 4. He cites fear for Board Chairman Catterlin and potential impact on the Zaca Lake expansion as reasons. Navarro allegedly sought 50 000 dollars with a counter offer of 10 000 through Henry Rodriguez.

Controlled burn escapes on Larsen Ranch near Lompoc

A planned 1 400 acre burn on the Larsen Ranch escaped Miguelito Canyon Road, scorching about 75 acres of steep brush south of Lompoc. Firefighters from county, Air Force, state forestry, Johns Manville unit, Range Improvement Association ranchers and observers contained the blaze with six retardant drops and heavy equipment. No injuries or property damage were reported as crews prepared a 200 acre burn on the Hayes Ranch nearby.

Nixon may provide testimony in Watergate trial

Ford vetoes information bill expanding government access

President Ford vetoed a Freedom of Information Act expansion claiming constitutional and security risks. He argued court declassification would weaken national security and warned confidentiality could be harmed if FBI and other files are less protected.
