Soviet cosmonauts return after orbital mission touchdown

The Tass announcement placed the return at 12:26 p.m. Moscow time about 193 miles northwest of Karaganda. The crew, feeling excellent, endured the flight well and received a warm welcome at the landing site from search officials, sports commissioners, friends and journalists. The descent used retro rockets and soft landing engines for a smooth touch down as Baikonur TV captured the moment with controllers applauding. Helicopters spotted the parachute above a snow flecked plain where greeters awaited the crew after the heat searing capsule was lowered. The mission aimed to pave the way for a manned orbital station and included extensive scientific technological and medico-biological investigations.
