Lompoc Judo Dojo Performs at Santa Maria Tournament

Thirty members of the Lompoc American Legion Judo Dojo competed at Hancock College in the Santa Maria Regional Judo Tournament against teams from Northern Nanka Yudanshakai. Roy Velasquez and Scott Evans earned top placements in Yonen with 4 wins apiece and promotion to Orange Belt. Shonen competitor Steve Lujan earned third in his age group. Ron Lujan won first in Senior White Belt and Joe Otero placed in Senior Brown Belt. Team targets California State Championships in Los Angeles on Oct 28 and invites inquiries to Ron Johnston or Gus Piperakis.

Local Girls Win Big at Lompoc Junior Tennis Tourney

Out-of-town contenders dominated the Lompoc Tennis Club event held at Lompoc High. Carrie Gill of Righetti swept the 16 and 18 and under singles titles with 6 2 6 1 and 6 3 6 0 wins. Gill teamed with Brenda Lundberg to reach 18 and under doubles final, losing 6 2 6 2 to Santa Maria pair Furuhama Shively.

Lompoc Riders Dominate Coalinga European Scrambles

Andy Anderson won the Honda 125 overall ahead of 250 cc riders while Vince Clark took the 125 cc Senior trophy on Suzuki. Ron Beardsley won the 125 cc Intermediate on Honda, with 12 rivals bested. Several riders withdrew due to bike problems and Chuck Myers injured. Next, spillway Park in Santa Maria hosts the following Sunday racing.

Mt Sac Invite Girls Cross Country Results Highlight Local Club

Kerri Marshall of Lompoc Valley Track Club finished second in the 14 15 division at Mt Sac with a 4 41 on the 9 mile course tied for first. Cindy Tykeson was fourth in the 14 15 2 6 mile in 16 59, Maggie Knickrehm 60th in the 12 13 2 mile. Sherrie Holmdahl won the Lucia Mar 10 11 mile in 8 12 5 with Lori Hester second and Sally Humble third. Susan Nealy won the 9 and under 4 mile in 7 42 Lisa Green second Colleen Feeley third in the 12 13 2 mile in 11 27.

Freitas Named PCAA Offensive Player of the Week

San Diego State quarterback Jesse Freitas earned the PCAA offensive honor after a 27-0 victory over New Mexico State despite injuring a hip pointer in the third quarter. He went 18 of 28 for 260 yards and a touchdown before leaving.

Russell's center McDaniels stars in Sonics win over Bucks

Jim McDaniels, a seven footer new to the NBA after leaving the ABA, led Seattle with 29 points and 18 rebounds as the Sonics beat Milwaukee 109 to 100. Kareem Abdul Jabbar fouled out early, scoring 23 for the Bucks while Seattle got four starters in double figures.

Bulldogs pull upset 17 14 over Moorpark Raiders

Hancock College’s Lee Brownell kicks a 21 yard field goal with 15 seconds left as the Bulldogs topple Moorpark 17 14. Freshman Brownell threw two TD passes to David Amido while Johnny Taylor rushed for Moorpark. Bill Penny sealed the win with a last play interception.
