Judge Dodson seeks Mural Room as courtroom sparking clash

A confrontation looms between Judge Floyd C. Dodson and the county clerk over use of the historic Mural Room as Dodson's courtroom and space for court administration. The Board of Supervisors may address the issue Oct 21 as talks continue.

Residents seek new hearings to rescind Santa Ynez C-2 rules

Solvang and Buellton business groups appealed to the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors to void a mid July C-2 zoning ordinance. They allege inadequate notice for Planning Commission and Supervisors hearings. The measure, already in effect, tightens lot size, development, parking and landscaping rules for retail zones in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Rabies cases rise countywide including Santa Barbara areas

Two more rabies cases were diagnosed October 10 by the Health Department Laboratory. A skunk from Santa Barbara and a fox from Via Regina increased county tally to 24 since January 1, 1974. Six bat cases appear in Goleta Santa Barbara Carpinteria. Officials urge vaccination for pets and caution around wildlife. Call Santa Barbara County Animal Control for help.

Obituaries note services for Richard William Schmidt 53 who died at Lompoc District Hospital with services at Gregory McPeek Chapel and interment at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. Survivors include Eleanor wife Richard Jr and Karen Little. Schmidt served 26 years in Air Force and headed NASA security at Vandenberg. Walter Bates Grant, 48, of Santa Barbara, faces DUI charges after arrest on Alamo Pintado. A public hearing on a 55 percent cable rate hike by TelePrompTer Corp. is set for Wednesday after the November 5 election. Navarro bribery trial set to begin in Santa Barbara

Testimony in the bribery case against Raul Navarro opened with defense arguing the $1,000 payment from Zaca Lake Resort developer was campaign contributions. Judge Westwick deferred start to Tuesday after venue of 65 prospective jurors was exhausted and jurors warned to avoid media.

Children warned against washing ears by Hamburg doctor
