Pravda artfully lauds President Nixon citing his foreign policy record and Moscow visit as key drivers of reelection prospects. George McGovern is depicted as shifting positions while most observers forecast Nixon victory amid voter disillusionment.
United Press International reports 14 500 GM workers at Mansfield Ohio Doraville Ga and St Louis Mo plants walked off idle prompting possible shutdown of all North American assembly plants. A Van Nuys strike was averted by early settlement. Fisher Body stamping plant Mansfield faced 2350 UAW Local 549 walkout over work standards.
Santa Maria carpenter Michael Mattson has qualified as a write in candidate for the 13th District Congressional seat in the November General Election. County Clerk J. E. Lewis confirmed Mattson paid 425 filing fees and was accepted by the Secretary of State in Sacramento. Mattson, likely a first time candidate, filed after a request for an official declaration form and a check to the Secretary of State. He must file candidacy notices with Santa Barbara and Ventura counties as the district includes those areas. Mattson, of 302 West Sunset Ave in Santa Maria, will challenge incumbent Charles Teague, a Republican. Lewis does not know Mattson’s party affiliation yet. Write-in candidates have until Oct. 30 to qualify.
McGovern canvasses from Boston to Seattle urging a defense secretary from military advisers and an agriculture secretary from farmers while Nixon seeks labor backing at the White House. Nixon rallies Atlanta crowds and vows no tax increases with a spending ceiling. A Minnesota campus audience hears a Vietnam war death account from a Vietnam veteran. In California, a drug death case sees murder charges against Daniel McCullough dismissed for insufficient evidence. two others released.
City officials and experts told a Press Club panel that a $1.5 million bond is the cheapest path to meet state sewer requirements. The plan funds the regional $9.3 million disposal system with federal grants covering most costs, leaving the city with about $1.7 million. Vandenberg Village, Mission Hills, and a federal institution join the effort, with local loans or rate increases possible. Proponents stressed future water reuse and a lower effluent cost versus imported water.
