Kissinger outlines U S policy on Middle East detente

Secretary of State Kissinger said the United States will take a firm stand against any Soviet actions in the Middle East that threaten detente. He stressed moderation for now but warned that once Soviet moves become irresponsible Washington will act decisively. He noted limited arms to Israel and noted warning gaps before last weekend’s Arab attack.

Isla Vista Seeks Incorporation With Local Agency Review

Isla Vistans filed an incorporation proposal with the Local Agency Formation Commission in Santa Barbara. The 70 day review will precede any action, with UCSB Associated Students backing the move and Goleta Valley Chamber later expected to pursue Goleta Valley incorporation.

Reagan declines to commit to VP offer amid Nixon talks

Sacramento UPI Reagan says he is honored by Gordon C. Luce's recommendation as vice presidential candidate but refuses to say if he would accept an offer from President Nixon to replace Spiro Agnew. He defers to the process and says he will abide by Congress and party views.

Central coast water meeting at Allan Hancock College

A conference on central coast water problems will be held tomorrow at Allan Hancock College student center starting 9 a.m. The event is hosted by the League of Women Voters and the AAUW with speakers from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties and state water agencies. Admission is free. Elsewhere, a Lompoc man faces a Santa Maria court readiness conference October 19 after a prior arrest for assault with a deadly weapon and morals offenses against children.

Rescue crews lose hope for trapped seamen off French coast

In Sangatte France rescuers said they had virtually given up on saving several seamen trapped inside a capsized dredger off the northern coast. While the men tapped to signal life they fell silent after 2:30 p.m. due to high seas. Crews lowered their flag to half mast as evening wore on.

Elnard Grosz 63 obituary in Ojai services Monday

Funeral services for Elnard Blackie Grosz 63 will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Ojai. Interment will follow in Ojai. Grosz born 1909 in South Dakota came to Lompoc in 1936, served in the military in 1942, later moved to Ojai in the 1950s, survived by Florence his wife and son David both of Ojai, sister Jarjorie Cortright and niece Linda Barto of Lompoc. Rebozo Cash Payments Tied to Nixon Campaign Fund

Los Angeles deposition confirms Howard Hughes aide Richard G. Danner gave two $50 000 cash payments to Bebe Rebozo for Nixon campaign funds in 1969 or 1970. Danner, Maheu, and others describe cash transfers at Rebozo offices and at the Western White House, Key Biscayne, and San Clemente.
