California Vehicle Emissions Drop Over Eight Years
An eight year study by the California Air Resources Board finds new cars meet emission standards and anti smog devices work. Tests of 21 000 vehicles since 1965 show 1974 models emit 83 percent fewer hydrocarbons 79 percent fewer carbon monoxide and 58 percent fewer oxides of nitrogen than pre 1966 cars. About 67 percent of in use vehicles meet engine timing and idle specs.
