Solvang Criterium and Tour de Santa Ynez Set Records

Ray Schulz of Ventura set a Solvang Criterium mark in 1 hour 34 minutes 34 seconds for the Senior I and II 57 laps 40 miles. Alan Fenyves led the junior Criterium in 1 hour 2 minutes 57 seconds. Rory O Reilly won the Tour de Santa Ynez 72 mile race in 2 hours 52 minutes, setting a senior record.

Santa Barbara County 4-H Recognitions Honor State Winners

A Santa Ynez Valley 4-H member and alumnus are among state winners in the California 4-H Recognition and Awards program. Frank Costa, 16, of Buellton, won in food crops science. Thomas M. Petersen of Ballard earned alumni recognition. Patrici Porfiri, 17, of Santa Maria, also a state winner in clothing, and adult leader Zelda Hughes of Goleta East earned honors. Alternates include Wendy Smith, Jodi Marchiando, and Don Fletcher in various categories.

Big Buck winners highlighted at Santa Ynez Valley event

The Santa Ynez Valley Sportsmen's Assn awarded top buck honors at the annual Big Buck contest dinner in Solvang with more than 100 attendees. Bill Ealand led with a 23 inch 3 and 3 spread, while Bill Taylor claimed most points and Chaves and Williams won widest horn spreads. Gail Giorgi and Rich Rochelle won special prizes. Barry Johnson and Roger Masonheimer hosted. The event included a tri up barbecue prepared by association directors and dancing to Santa Rosa tunes.

FFA wins big at Los Angeles County Fair

Santa Ynez Valley High School Future Farmers of America members returned home with top prizes in livestock. Joanne Young's goat won grand champion, Cindy Hamilton's steer was reserve champion, and multiple first place ribbons—plus the chapter earned the clean stall award.
