Reports say hundreds of civilians were caught in fighting between South Vietnamese militiamen and Communist troops along Highway 1 about 25 miles northeast of Saigon. At least six civilians died and 28 were wounded as vehicles stranded on the road. The same day, Viet Cong attempted to stampede water buffalo at a ranger base, while U S advisers call it a wild West show.
An Atlas Burner II boosted a satellite carrying five scientific experiments and a military radar target into a near polar orbit about 400 miles up. The Air Force stated the mission furthers the defense space test program and will calibrate ground units with a known object.
