Hurricane Gladys turns from coast and eases threat
Hurricane Gladys, packing 130 mph winds, veered away from North Carolina shores and the Outer Banks. Forecasters said the danger substantially lessened as the center moved north-northeast about 250 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras. Residents prepared minimally while some fishermen took advantage of increased fish feeding activity offshore.

Senate keeps natural gas price ceiling in place
The Senate voted 57 to 31 to reject lifting federal price controls on natural gas and set up a compromise plan. The plan would allow some emergency winter sales outside controls while leaving intrastate pricing under review and urging production to run at full efficiency.
