UPI reports rising inflation worsens the recovery as prices for food oil and aluminum climb. A 3 percent rise in farm prices alongside higher car and TV costs will appear in wholesale data. Separate notes show New York City's fiscal crisis affecting markets and Oregon selling 125 million in bonds with limited demand.
Two inmates Rollins and Cassidy seized three hostages in a visiting room at the Federal Correction Center for Youths in Englewood Colorado. After 10 hours Father Tim Ondahl and counselor Paul Ortiz persuaded them to release the hostages and surrender. Cassidy and Rollins were serving terms for burglary and bank robbery respectively.
Police said a remote chance exists the three gunmen barricaded in a Spaghetti House basement could kill six hostages but there was no sign of an end to the siege. Officers treat the situation as calm with a developing, nonviolent surrender aim and no flight to the West Indies.
The CIA told the House Select Committee that its analytical performance in predicting the 1974 Cyprus coup and related crisis events was not up to standard. The agency blamed gaps in reporting and a State Department failure to act on accurate predictions, noting Athens agents did not inform the U.S. ambassador of planning and negotiations.
