California divorce reform aims for painless dissolution of marriages

Gov. Reagan signs a sweeping 1969 amendment replacing fault grounds with irreconcilable differences. The law ends the word divorce and provides equal division of community property, alimony considerations, and standard custody decisions. It also cuts waiting and residency periods and moves toward less acrimony in family breakups.

Experiment at Chessington Zoo draws crowds

At Chessington Zoo a trio from London sat behind bars as an experiment for a scientific group. They wore face paint and read newspapers while being served tea and biscuits as onlookers pressed close. Brisley said the scene evoked hysteria toward spectators.
