Pilot fought airline landing procedure in fatal crash inquiry

A Toronto inquiry heard Air Canada Captain Peter Hamilton opposed the line’s landing procedure for deploying spoilers on DC8 jets. Officials Hear Call for Wider Right of Way for Flood Control

Control Engineer James Stubbner and State Division of Highways official Henry Case testified for a right of way wider than usual to accommodate flood control sewer lines and a four lane highway. Projections cited widths up to nearly 300 feet in some areas. The commission had planned to continue the matter but Santa Maria city officials’ appearance prompted action and the issue was resolved.

Thanksgiving holiday death toll trails last year

United Press International reports that Thanksgiving traffic deaths total 319 by 10 a.m. EST with California leading at 49 and New York 19. NSC estimates 670 to 770 fatalities possible by Sunday, but toll runs about 20 percent behind 1969.

Death of Mrs. Emma Coker 93 Taft Former Lompoc Resident

Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Emma Coker 93 of Taft former Lompoc resident. Graveside services are held today in Taft. She was the twin sister of Mrs. Clara Westrope of Lompoc who died in April. Born and raised in Lompoc she is survived by a niece Mrs. Agnes Hamilton and a nephew Neal Westrope in Lompoc.

Planning department lays groundwork for shoreline plan

County Planning Director Herbert Divelbiss said staff is setting criteria and standards for a shoreline plan to control beach areas, possibly in collaboration with UC Santa Barbara under a sea grant program. Commissioner Hassander urged strong protection to preserve recreational use of beaches.

Ten Die in Five-Vehicle Turnpike Crash Near Downingtown

Ten people including six children were killed and at least 11 injured in two related crashes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Downingtown. A Philadelphia family en route to Reading was wiped out when the father attempting a U turn was struck broadside after a rig ran out of control in the westbound lane. Police said the first crash occurred at 5 15 p m when a well drilling rig overturned on a curve causing a chain reaction into eastbound traffic.
