Garvey and NFL at odds again over roster cuts

NFL Players Association head Ed Garvey said the league informed him of a plan to trim rosters from 47 to 36 next season. NFL Management Council countered that a 36-man limit has existed since 1964, noting the prior change was tied to a players strike and not a permanent reduction.

Burroughs Named AL MVP in 1974 March

Texas Ranger Jeff Burroughs, 23, voted American League MVP with 248 points by 24 BBWAA members. He led AL in RBIs with 118 and hit .301 with 25 homers in 1973 while credits Ted Williams and Billy Martin for his development. Ranks among youngest MVP winners, ahead of Oakland trio Rudi Bando and Jackson.

Braves Rated 6th in Final CIF 3-A Poll

The Lompoc Braves held the number six spot in the season's final CIF-SS 3-A Prep Football Writers Poll. They host Burbank in the opening CIF 3-A playoff round Friday. Burbank suffered its second league loss 36 0 to undefeated Burroughs. Santa Maria finished 15th with five points. El Modena entered the top ten at ten after Morningside dropped out.

Bullets Lose to Knicks as Bullets Fall in Tight Finish

In NBA action the Washington Bullets trailed 55-43 at half but surge to lead 85-84 late. Walt Frazier scored 17 for New York and his late heroics, including a tapped-in basket after a rebound, sealed an 86-85 Knicks win.

European Professional Basketball League Formed With 8 Teams

The European Professional Basketball League officially formed after drafting 166 former U.S. pro and college stars to an eight team circuit set to start January 17. Teams span Barcelona Madrid London Belgium Tel Aviv Munich Grenoble Lyon and Switzerland. EPL will play 42 game regular seasons with a double elimination championship tournament and will not recruit current NBA or ABA players.
