Skylab 3 launch success sets stage for long mission

County park commissioners to be paid and park closure plan

County Park Commission members will receive a $35 monthly attendance payment for meetings. The commission also recommends closing 17 overnight camp sites at Nojoqui Falls County Park until facilities are upgraded, shifting those sites to day use due to high picnic demand.

Stratford apartments fire kills 24 in Los Angeles

A massive blaze at the 45 year old Stratford apartments in Los Angeles killed 24 residents and injured 49 as many died in beds or leaped from upper floors. Firemen recovered 22 bodies at the scene with two more dead on arrival. The fire began in the lobby and rushed upward via an open stairway described as a gigantic chimney by Deputy Commander D J Brunetti.

Lompoc Eyes Daylight Saving to Cut Energy Use

City officials estimate permanent daylight saving time could cut Lompoc electricity use by about 3 percent annually. Norm Asbridge of Vandenberg AFB provided figures, with projected oil savings around 4000 barrels yearly and 311 hours less lighting per home.
