Senate rejects bill to raise cigarette tax for cancer research

The Senate by a wide margin defeated a bill to raise the cigarette tax by five cents a pack, aiming to generate about 90 million dollars yearly for cancer and medical research. Sen. Alan Short argued smokers should pay for health costs, while Sen. Walter Stiern opposed taxing smokers.

Lompoc Mental Health Association Plans Election Meeting

The annual meeting and election of officers for the Lompoc Mental Health Association will be held tomorrow at noon at the Bethany Lutheran Church Social Hall 135 South E. Richard Jacoby president says a buffet luncheon will be served by the Lutheran Ladies Guild.
