County Auditor-Controller Paul Floyd calls on law enforcement and postal authorities to curb forged welfare checks after numbers doubled in two weeks. Businesses pay restitution while the county avoids losses. a joint program uses handwriting experts to pursue culprits and requires identification to cash welfare checks.
The state attorney general's office is asked to rule on a secret interim report from the 1972 County Grand Jury about a resigned county pathologist who allegedly mixed up autopsy reports. Judge Floyd Dodson kept the report sealed, prompting questions of legality and possible filing with the Board of Supervisors if deleted from the final report. The Grand Jury may include the interim findings in its December final report, per courthouse sources.
UPI reports the McCrary family linked to 16 killings across seven states with 22 suspected murders under investigation. Family split up and facing charges in Texas California and Colorado. Extraditions and prior prison sentences noted along with victims and locations.
Sources say the Defense Department may cut bases and civilian staff next year to meet a 250 billion dollar spending ceiling. A 10 percent manpower cut is eyed but opposed, with reductions likely to begin early next year and accelerate after July 1 1973.
President Nixon flew to Camp David to press ahead with government overhaul while consulting Gen Haig on Vietnam cease fire prospects. Haig returned from Saigon with Thieu about the draft peace accord which Thieu balks at, citing a coalition and enclaves for North Vietnamese troops.
