Fertilizer boosts beef yields in Santa Barbara County tests
UC farm advisor Lin Maxwell reports nitrogen fertilization on Santa Barbara County grasslands increases beef output. In a 100 acre Sisquoc Ranch trial, fertilized plots with 72 tons of ammonia produced cows gaining 4 440 pounds and calves 4 675 over 102 days, versus unfertilized gains of 2 800 and 2 680. Net meat value per fertilized acre reached 34 80 dollars, about double the unfertilized return, with nitrogen costing 13 8 cents per pound and potential profit of 26 cents per beef pound. Cooperation from Bill Caldera, Dr Bill Martin, Davis cattle and range expert Lester J Berry, Pete Jameson, and Valley Nitrogen supported the study.
