Voter turnout defies apathy fears in 1970 elections
Across the United States voters turned out in heavy numbers as forecasts of apathy failed. By 4:05 p.m. EST about 87% of precincts reported 70.2 million ballots cast from 146.1 million eligible, a turnout not near the 1960 record but robust. In California, Canyon County’s bid to form a new county failed 69.4 to 30.4 percent, with outside areas voting against secession.
