Rockefeller states he will not be a candidate for the Republican vice presidency and will continue serving as vice president. He notes the presidential candidate chooses a running mate and stresses readiness to assist the nation until a new president and vice president are elected.
Eva Elizabeth Baranoff 24 of Santa Barbara suffered a fractured pelvis in a three car crash on Highway 1 three miles south of Jalama Road. One driver, Wallace Brent Hawkins 30 of Inglewood, was jailed on a felony drunken driving charge. Baranoff listed in satisfactory condition at Lompoc Hospital. Several other injured were treated and released at Lompoc Hospital. The CHP cited Hawkins for crossing the center line. Highs in the 60s to low 70s through Tuesday with mild winds and tides posted.
City Council will meet at City Hall at 7 30 p m to review Community Development Block Grant spending and discuss proposed projects including senior and youth centers a community center gymnasium and a new fire sub station. Additional items include a missile removal bid and land use safety measures.
President Ford told congressional leaders he has fired Defense Secretary James R. Schlesinger and CIA Director William E. Colby. Donald Rumsfeld would replace Schlesinger and George Bush would replace Colby, with Kissinger not confirming a role change. The move follows policy disputes and signals a broader transition team reshaping the administration.
Spain warned it will resist a Moroccan seizure of the Sahara with Algeria also opposing the move. Moroccan Prime Minister Ahmed Osman met Madrid leaders while U.N. Secretary General Waldheim prepared to confer with King Hassan II. The Security Council urged restraint as King Hassan led a planned march of 350,000 civilians toward the phosphate rich territory.
