Robert Gainer, a sailor, was found unharmed 625 miles east of Puerto Rico after 17 days alone in the Atlantic aboard a damaged sloop. A U S Coast Guard search plane located him as rescuers approached.
A Dutch tug relayed a Mayday from 23 year old sailor Robert Gainer of Hillside New Jersey after his 31 foot sloop Boodles Ginny lost its tiller. The Coast Guard planned to dispatch cutter Sherman from San Juan for a daylong rescue. Gainer has 200 days of food and 35 gallons of water aboard and is reported in good condition. His father said a new boat could be his reward for coming home.
A U.S. salvage team raised a 13 foot Phoenix missile from 1900 feet of Atlantic water after a flood of heavy seas and 20 foot waves hampered initial attempts. The missile remained intact with light damage though the accompanying Tomcat F14 aircraft remains unrecovered. The UPI report notes the weapon’s capability to track 24 targets and engage six within seconds, underscoring its status as a premier mobile weapon system.
