Supreme Court Upholds Union Seniority Amid Civil Rights Tensions

The Supreme Court rules 7 to 2 that union seniority systems may preserve existing rights despite potential discrimination under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Justice Stewart writes the system honors workers' accrued rights. Brennan and Marshall dissent on the aspect of discrimination. The ruling centers on Teamsters and industry practice in trucking. The decision also allows retroactive seniority for post act discrimination and addresses unemployment benefits in strike-related layoffs. The term also sees an 8 to 0 ruling that a state may deny jobless benefits during a strike, and a 5 to 4 decision striking down an East Cleveland zoning ordinance limiting relatives in single families.
