Shelter explosion in North Carolina kills five children
In Valdese North Carolina a backyard bomb shelter from the 1960s Cuban missile crisis exploded killing five children who were playing on its steps. A sixth child was injured as investigators consider leaking gas or gasoline fumes from the shelter as the cause. The blast hurled a body 300 feet onto a road and scattered thick concrete debris over a wide area. The shelter stood beside Ed Barron's home and contained large gasoline stocks and a butane tank.

The day care plan, championed by Speaker Bob Moretti, could enroll up to 500000 children, with the state paying about 25 million dollars in the first year. The other proposal aims to expand schools to four year olds and restructure K through third grade with lower pupil teacher ratios and retraining for teachers.
