Singlaub before Congress in defense of Korea policy stance
Army Maj. Gen. John K Singlaub testified before a House subcommittee that his remarks on South Korea troop withdrawals were misunderstood as challenging civilian control. He said he spoke as a military professional and did not intend to dispute U.S. policy. He explained his firing stemmed from a misread interview and asserted he meant background commentary to aid reporters. In contrast, California officials debated pay hikes with a 10.1 percent average rise for 154,000 state workers and a $209 million funding plan, despite Brown's broader 6.5 percent proposal.

Carter's early SBA advice foreshadowed political ambition
Thomas Perry of Atlanta recalls advising Jimmy Carter in 1966 68 while he ran a cotton warehouse business in Plains Georgia. Perry notes Carter faced inadequate working capital and weak inventory controls and had obtained a $175000 SBA loan in 1962 to expand his operation. Perry says Carter sought absentee ownership if elected governor and the warehouse business is now valued around $3 million.

Subsidized health care costs rise faster than defense spending
Health, Education and Welfare Secretary Joseph Califano warned that without new hospital cost controls, five years of rising subsidized health care costs could exceed defense spending. He testified on Carter's plan to curb hospital reimbursements as costs climb about 15 percent yearly while defense budgets grow less rapidly. Kennedy praised the proposal as a starting point but criticized the American Hospital Association for lacking concrete savings figures.
