Indios artifacts show coastal Indians relied on salty red berries from cliff plants and seeds from button sage along the coastal plain. Acorns from Live and Tan bark oaks fed long simmered porridges, while stone mortars and long leaching made tannin-free bread.
The County Planning Commission on Wednesday declined to revoke the conditional use permit for Pozzolan Products Airox Inc open pit mining and refining in Casmalia. Stanley Hatch said the company has invested about 2 million dollars in plant redesign to meet air quality rules and will remedy drainage issues. The commission ordered cooperation with landowners to prevent further agricultural impact. Pozzolan plans drainage control measures and improvements approved by the State Water Quality Control Board regional directors. A Ventura firm produced runoff erosion findings. In other news, tours of Vandenberg AFB will run June 6 for Lompoc residents and June 7 for Santa Maria residents. registration is at Lompoc or Santa Maria Chambers of Commerce. Tours last about 3.5 hours.
Santa Barbara County will mail a record 124 493 ballots and pamphlets starting Friday with additional packets distributed Saturday. County Clerk J E Lewis notes a large workload due to high 18 to 20 year old registrations and initiative petition checks. Absent ballots estimated at 4000 with costs around 6826 dollars. Write in candidates must qualify by May 26 with the secretary of state.
Mrs. Richard Nixon enjoyed a Moscow visit with her husband as President Nixon wrapped a long day with the Bolshoi Ballet in the theater. Earlier they toured the Bolshoi Ballet School and met with Brezhnev after a lengthy negotiating session.
Principal Robert H. Paisola announced that Glen Green Eileen Pochalonis and David Stegman share the valedictorian title for the class of 1972. Green plans to attend Stanford University. Pochalonis will study nursing at LA County Medical Center School. Stegman will attend the University of Arizona.
