First impact of new tax law felt next month
The new tax law changes withholding starting in June adding up to 4 dollars per week to most pay, while subtracting 1 dollar weekly from some single earners. It shifts to flat standard deductions and folds credits into tables, easing filing for many but increasing liability for some itemizers next year.

Court narrows obscenity deference by states ruling
Supreme Court on a busy day ruled 5 to 4 that a federal jury in Iowa must apply federal obscenity guidelines rather than state law when determining if material is offensive. The decision upheld a Des Moines man's conviction for sending obscene material through the mail within the state. The court also addressed union security in contracts, compelled dues in Detroit, and allowed reporters wider access to prisons in one case while restricting coverage in Florence. It denied hearings on press access at a Jacksonville home and on Penthouse’s libel suit against California resort operators. Additional actions included resuming Vietnam talks in Paris and considering housing subsidies and abortion consent rules for neglected girls. The court also held nonresidents cannot be barred from fishing and aliens may fish commercially within three miles.
