Mansfield vows to press fight on troop cuts in Europe

Senate Leader Mike Mansfield said he will again push to cut the 300,000 man U S force in Europe after his defeat 61 to 36. He argued reductions ease the dollar crisis and press NATO allies to share defense costs.

Five charged in bold burglaries in Santa Maria area

Police credited two clerks with catching five Santa Maria women suspected of shoplifting more than 1000 dollars in merchandise from Lompoc stores. All items were recovered as the suspects led officers from Walnut Plaza to Moore's and Stalker's before arrest. Bail set at 10875 each for Peggy Baez and Dalia Cedillos.

House abandons bid to revive the SST program

The House formally declared the supersonic transport project dead after a large Senate rejection. Chairman George H. U S Helicopters Hit as North Vietnamese Fight A Shau Valley

U S helicopters came under heavy fire while U S and ARVN troops battled dug-in NVA forces at both ends of the A Shau Valley in South Vietnam. In Laos a 12 hour attack drove government forces from Houei Kong on the Bolovens Plateau. ARVN units reported 38 NVA killed in one engagement and the 54th ARVN regiment fought eight hours at the valley’s northeastern end, taking five more losses.
