Common Cause mobilizes citizens against Vietnam war

The 145,000 member Common Cause lobby uses a phone blitz and a six-member letter to urge House members to vote for ending the Vietnam War this year. Organizer John Gardner says the effort seeks 218 signatures for a majority, with volunteers claiming high responsiveness from moderates and a focus on persuading lawmakers. Subsequently, a brief note covers a separate UK theft case where Jonathan Howe trapped a thief after lingerie was stolen from a clothesline, leading to the thief’s capture and a court hearing.

Pill and cancer link urged against long term oral contraceptives

At the National Conference on Breast Cancer Dr Edward Lewison of Johns Hopkins cautioned premalignant breast lesions and high cancer risk should avoid prolonged estrogenic birth control. He linked estrogen hormones to epithelial breast tissue changes and noted ovarian estrogen fuels growth of these cells. A separate report from Dr Martin Vessey said early data show no link and perhaps protection against benign lesions. Cardinal Agagianian, 75, longtime church leader, died at his Rome home after illness.
