Seventeen prisoners reused from cells during a surprise inspection slipped into the prison laundry, chipped a wall, and escaped through a small hole late Wednesday night. Police recaptured six fugitives by early today as guards were moved to another tier during the search.
A Department of Transportation official says the state must decide how to handle 354 acres bought for the defunct Highway 1 Bypass. Options include environmental impact planning, selling or scaling down the project. Land remains unused and tied up in about $2 million in right of way costs.
U S forces including Marines Navy and Air Force liberated the freighter Mayaguez and its 45 man crew after a 14 hour battle on Koh Tang Island in the Gulf of Thailand. Initial reports list 14 missing Americans and 1 Marine and 1 airman killed with several wounded. Pentagon says the action as a test of freedom of the seas and a response to diplomacy failing with Cambodia. White House and Congress express support for President Ford amid the crisis.
Lompoc Park and Recreation Department presents a 75 76 budget of 270 246 with 232 746 for administration 34 200 for development and 3 300 for equipment. A May 21 review session at 2 30 p m will allow Superintendent Jack Anderson to add items for next year.
