Historian Seeks PhDs to Save Oral History and Folklore
UC professor Lawrence W Levine proposes using unemployed PhDs to save oral history and folklore of ethnic and migrant groups. He cites 1930s Federal Writers Project interviews with ex slaves and argues that gathering songs tales and dances preserves Black culture and supports future scholarship. He urges federal or state funding and notes folklore from migrations like the Oklahoma dust bowl era. He also notes King Khaled’s Mecca pilgrimage after recent surgeries.
