Lompoc Board Approves Center Expansion Plans and Contracts

The Board of Supervisors approved a monthly 85 rental for a residence on the proposed Lompoc Civic Center site and a public hearing for May 26 on Vandenberg Village rezoning. They authorized a no bid road work contract up to 10 000, awarded exterior painting at Lompoc Memorial Building, and approved 15516 for Carpinteria Valley Park improvements.

Tonnelli resigns CD post

John J. Tonnelli resigns as civil defense director for the city effective immediately after serving since March 1959. He will stay on as a radio operator and the role may be filled by City Administrator Gene Wahlers during emergencies. The council will honor him with a plaque and consider appointments to four city bodies.

County Reviews Out of State Welfare Cases in Secret Session

The county board held a second secret session to study welfare cases involving recipients living outside the county and even outside the country. The aim is to see if neighboring counties or states can shoulder welfare costs to save county tax funds, despite eligibility challenges noted by County Counsel George P. Kading. The supervisors fear welfare costs will rise after California’s one year residence rule was struck down.

Macco wins county ok for Gaviota seacoast village plan

Macco Corporation of Newport Beach won Board of Supervisors approval to start the initial phase of a 750 000 seacoast village tourist complex at Gaviota. The action rezones 15 of 40 acres north of U S Highway 101 near Gaviota State Beach Park. The plan aims to upgrade the area and serve as a gateway to Hollister Ranch development, though full county approval is pending and hearings will follow.

New Jersey Captain Defends Vietnam Mission On Return

Capt. J. Edward Snyder Jr of the battleship New Jersey defended the seven month deployment off Vietnam at a news conference in Long Beach California. He displayed a 23 pound shrapnel fragment from a two ton shell and praised the ship as a floating artillery platform with nine large tubes able to penetrate rock and destroy Communist caves.

Obituary of Lucille Culberson

Lucille Ethel Culberson, 71, died yesterday at Lompoe District Hospital. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Mc Peek Family Chapel with reading by Mrs. Alvin Allyn. Interment at Evergreen Cemetery. She lived at 432 South I St Apt B, and was born March 15, 1898 in Adrian Michigan. Survivors: two sons William and Warren of Lompoe, sister Mrs. Marvel Berge of West Covina, father Christopher Ames of Covina California, and five grandchildren.

San Antonio Officers Arrest Thefts Suspect At Cafe

Two patrolmen from San Antonio observed a man pocket a 25 cent tip left by them at a cafe while paying their check. The man was arrested for theft under five dollars.
