Wholesale food prices fell for the second month in April while unemployment stayed at 5.9 percent. Farm products and processed foods dropped 0.7 percent, yet the overall wholesale price index rose 0.1 percent as industrial commodities climbed. Seasonal adjustments show mixed signals and lingering higher winter gains.
Rescue efforts for 50 miners trapped a mile underground at the Sunshine silver mine stalled as emergency bulkheads leaked smoke and carbon monoxide. At least 32 miners are confirmed dead from the fire that began three days earlier. 108 of 190 workers escaped, with bodies recovered over three days.
Saigon reports the United States introduces guided missiles for helicopter use against tanks and dispatches five generals and admirals to observe potential new weapons in the field. North Vietnam uses over 100 tanks at Quang Tri and presses toward Kontum as forces regroup for a broader advance.
Daniel C. Morgan a guard at the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc was arrested by the FBI for allegedly giving a false material statement to a Federal Grand Jury in Los Angeles. He testified about a July or August 1971 fishing trip on Tony Alessio’s boat. The jury probes gifts and bribes involving John and Angelo Alessio. Morgan is on 30 day leave while charges are considered. The Grand Jury continues examining Lompoc irregularities.
The County Water Advisory Committee in Santa Barbara discussed expensive supplemental water and the end of bargain prices. They urged openness to state water and a desalter project with San Luis Obispo County, aiming for a joint funded system, with a June 15 response deadline to gauge county interest.
Holmdahl argues the county zoning decision blocks a slaughterhouse and holding pen near Lompoc. He supports rezoning for Warren and Gene Hogg, citing pollution concerns and potential economic benefits for ranchers and 4-HFFA projects. He notes no local slaughterhouse exists despite extensive livestock farming.
Lompoc Mental Health Services faces ongoing staffing shortages after budget cuts. Area coordinator Wallace Ault notes increases in patient caseload far outpace staff growth, hindering supervision and training for volunteers. The lack of nearby 24 hour care and board and care homes worsens overcrowding, while efforts on a Day Treatment Center in Santa Maria and new staff Mike Herman aim to expand facilities.
