Solvang woman earns wings in unusual way
Gwen Whitmore of Solvang earned a private pilot license after four months of training in a Piper J-3 Cub at Santa Ynez Airport. Instructor Dave Smith notes the unusual method reduced costs and highlights the J-3’s simplicity and hand propping. Whitmore, a Boeing Aerospace clerk at Vandenberg, soloed in January and March, then completed the checkride in April after 476 flying hours.
