County Budget Preview Shows $3 Million Fund Balance

The 1974-75 preliminary county budget will show a fund balance around $3 million, about $2.9 million below the current year's total. No salary figures are set yet despite a 17 percent across the board request from the state employee group.

Nudists Lose First Skirmish Over County Beach Ban

Carpinteria Justice Court Judge James Pattillo overruled a demurrer challenging the four month old county ordinance banning nude bathing on beaches. Eight defendants from Santa Barbara and Carpinteria face arraignment May 16 at 10 a.m. after arrests on Summerland beach. The case moves toward possible appeal with defense attorneys planning reconsideration.

Memorial services for Bruce Gibson McNeil

Bruce Gibson McNeil 47 longtime Lompoc area educator died Tuesday after a long illness. Born 1926 in Redwood City he held an MA from Stanford and led several California schools including Orick Fillmore La Mesa. he founded Camp Unaloyee and was active in YMCA Phi Delta Kappa and church groups. Survived by Jean his wife two daughters Susan Bruce James two sisters and a brother. Memorial gifts to the Bruce McNeil Memorial Music Scholarship and cancer fund.

At a board meeting parents teachers and students urged keeping Miguelito open while suggesting alternatives like closing El Camino and leasing that property for city hall. Mission Hills council bans teen dances in community building

The Mission Hills Council executive board bans future rental of the community building for teen dances after damages and complaints from a dance held April 25. They blame misconduct by youths and harassment of residents and the Sheriff's Department. Meetings are the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Membership is $1 annually.

Veteran county director retires after 17 years of service

John E. Fabyanich, director of the County Resources and Collections Office, retires effective Tuesday ending a 17 year county government career. He led the office since its June 1963 opening after joining the county in 1957. Previously with Bank of America for eight years in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The Board of Supervisors approves consolidating the office with the auditor-controller, now planned for June or July to boost county collections. Reorganization of Floyd’s office proceeds concurrently.
