South Vietnamese forces abandoned Quang Tri capital and fled toward Hue as North Vietnamese forces pressed. U.S. advisers evacuated, with five helicopter lifts and several aircraft shot down. By nightfall only the 147th Marine Brigade remained an effective fighting unit amid collapsing defense lines.
Over the weekend five people were injured in three crashes across Lompoc Valley. Victims include Walter Lorenz Anderson 52 who hit a deer on Vandenberg Road sustaining major injuries. Mathew Norman Knickrehm 17 with a severe scalp laceration after colliding with a panel truck near Pine Avenue and H Street. two car passengers Nora Knickrehm 16 and Emily George 15 with multiple injuries. Oliver Hartley Jr. 16 with major injuries when his car rolled over on Highway 101 near Old Coast Highway.
UPI reports columnist Jack Anderson told a House subcommittee that FBI director J Edgar Hoover prepared secret memos detailing the personal lives of public figures including Lyndon Johnson, Marlon Brando, and Harry Belafonte. He urged government secrecy reforms, citing unwarranted investigations of Americans.
Gene Wahlers city administrator says preliminary 1972 73 budget will not raise the tax rate and a tight plan aims to hold the line. He notes possible 1973 74 tax decisions depend on federal revenue shares and other funds and that no major service or staff increases are planned unless new revenue appears. The budget remains under final revisions before tomorrow nights council presentation.
President Nixon told 200 Texans at John Connally's ranch that North Vietnam risks a grave outcome if the United States reduces air and sea support in Indochina. He warned South Vietnam could fall without U.S. backing and urged critics to tell it to Hanoi. He praised Connally and endorsed oil depletion incentives amid talks of tax rule changes.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers said Nixon was forced to increase military activity in Vietnam to protect about 16 000 U S troops in Hue and Danang and nearby provinces. He warned of dire consequences if the president did not act. Republican chairman Robert Dole defended the posture amid questions on NBC and ABC programs. Gravel urged withdrawal as an alternative to further action.
The Lompoc Jaycees received top district honors at the Atascadero gathering. Bob Gaston was named top president in parade of locals, Larry Flinkingshell state director, John Hannah outstanding district speaker, Larry Payton outstanding district spark, Neal Walker third in Speak Up, and man-miles trophies awarded. The chapter advances to the state convention May 11-13 in Oakland with over 5,000 Jaycees expected.
