Rancher charged over illegal grading at waterfall site
Santa Barbara County district attorney filed a criminal complaint against Ernest Hackel and associates for a disputed road project near Widow's Tears waterfall in Goleta Valley. The action cites a 10 foot wide road gouge in a steep canyon without a county grading permit. Will appear in Santa Barbara Municipal Court on April 6.

A belt of heavy snow stretched from the Great Lakes to Texas with warnings in Kansas and Missouri while travelers faced slick roads from New Mexico to Illinois. Snow accumulations reached three to four inches in parts of the Southwest, as a rescue search continued for six missing aboard a charter plane after a Grand Canyon departure in bad weather.

Majority of senators finally state stand
UPI reports a majority of senators oppose confirmation of G Harrold Carswell for the Supreme Court for the first time since Nixon nominated him. An April 6 vote on recommittal to the Judiciary Committee is expected, with 42 for recommittal and 39 against, plus 19 undecided. Senator John Sherman Cooper may reveal his stance tonight.

Lompoc Center Parking Lot to Close for Repaving
Lompoc shopping center will close its parking lot on Sunday for repaving as part of a safety project that removes diagonal parking and re strips the lot. Pine Street and H Street entrances close. College Avenue entrance remains open for Sunday shopping with speed bumps and new stop signs planned.

Dabney Cabin Named County Historic Landmark in California
The Dabney Cabin built in 1914 along Manzana Creek north of Figueroa Mountain was designated a County Historic Landmark by the County Historical Advisory Committee in Santa Barbara. Mentor Charles W. Dabney funded the cabin for trout fishing. Midland School will continue its use with the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society maintaining jurisdiction. The cabin, saved from destruction by the historical society and the school, also served as an outfitting camp for John Franzina and Paul Negus in earlier years.
