Local churches plan Easter services across many venues

Maundy Thursday services are set in several churches with Holy Communion at First United Methodist Church and Tenebrae at Valley of the Flowers United Church of Christ. Good Friday observances include a community union service at St Marys Episcopal Church and varied parish rites at First Presbyterian Bethany Lutheran La Purisima Catholic Church and others with Easter Sunrise and Sunday services noted.

Air controllers continue sick out amid slowdowns

Scores of air traffic controllers stayed home in a sickout as a court-ordered return to work raised delays. The FAA reported 52 percent at New York center, 74 percent in Denver, 67 percent in Cleveland, and 16 percent in Minneapolis. Northeast flights faced the heaviest disruption.

Superior orders led to execution of Vietnamese prisoner

Lt James B Duffy testified at a court martial that he ordered the killing of Do Van Man a South Vietnamese deserter after learning his superiors wanted the man dead He said four subordinates took the prisoner into the woods near Saigon in September and that he radioed the company commander to explain the shooting occurred as a planned act understanding the commander’s knowledge and approval.

Beverly Hills appoints hotel security chief interim police chief

Beverly Hills California acting head of security Paul Smith of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel became interim police chief after Joseph Kimble was fired by the City Council. The council, in a 3 to 2 vote, rejected retaining Kimble whose probation ends April 15.

County faces mass resignations over financial disclosure rules

Twenty six school board members including Lompoc’s John Beattie threaten to resign if current financial disclosure laws stay in force. Dall Armi cites 11 more potential resignations across 21 districts, forecasting election costs over 40 000 next year, as lawmakers consider revising the statute.

Planners Seek More Time on Wrecking Yard Sites

The County Planning Commission asked for extended study on locating automobile wrecking yards on county city owned property in the Lompoc Valley. A potential site discussed was the old county dump property north of Lompoc on the east side of State Highway 1.

Busy city tax counselors advise officials on financial disclosure law. Easter party scenes fade as discussions note zoning of an area south of Burton Mesa Boulevard for single family homes and a projected Highway 1 corridor. An adjacent county owned parcel at Lompoc Airport, near Santa Ynez River, is RA O on the south and unclassified on the north and may fit planning needs. The site is part of the airport complex and lies in an annexed city area where the general plan could change.

Agreement Reached on Safe Return of U S Diplomat

In Santo Domingo a final deal frees 21 political prisoners in exchange for the life of Lt. Col. Donald J. Crowley. Crowley will be handed to the Mexican ambassador as the prisoners depart for Mexico City on a Pan American flight.

Strike at Martin Marietta continues at Vandenberg base

More than 100 aerospace technicians and supply workers of the United Auto Workers Union kept their strike against Martin Marietta Corp at Vandenberg Air Force Base. A company spokesman said there has been no change and they are willing to meet, while Santa Maria official Gary Winzell argued wages and medical insurance offers do not meet aerospace standards.

Woman 18 killed in Highway 101 crash near Old Coast

Vickie Lynn of Bakersfield died on arrival at Santa Ynez Valley Hospital after a two vehicle wreck on Highway 101 a hundred yards north of Old Coast Highway. Driver Pete Dawson of Los Angeles injured. third passenger unharmed. Dawson transferred to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. A separate motorcycle crash near Rucker Road left Frederick Cordes with minor injuries. he declined medical aid.
