North County jail plan eyed to ease prisoner strain
A special committee of two county supervisors and Sheriff John W. Carpenter plus board chair Curtis Tunnell and Supervisor Charles F. Catterlin backs a high priority 100 unit north county jail at about 375000. With 100 bookings monthly in the north county and Santa Maria sending inmates after July 1 the existing Santa Maria facility at capacity cannot relieve the load. A portable work furlough station at the Santa Maria sub station could speed up programs while a two year readiness may be needed. A pending north county juvenile hall next fiscal year aims to ease congestion with about 35 bookings monthly.
