State agency seeks lead free gasoline in California

The Air Resources Board backed by Gov. Reagan asked the legislature to eliminate lead from gasoline, aiming to start next year and finish by 1977. The plan would cut back lead gradually, with full removal from regular fuel by 1974 and all lead gone by 1977, amid cost estimates and tax adjustments to promote low lead fuels.

Survival Of Ram sey Gen and five troops Endures Jungle Rescue

Major General Lloyd B. Ramsey and five subordinates were rescued after spending a night in Viet Cong controlled jungle seven miles west of Chu Lai. Two men died in the helicopter crash, the cause not yet determined but not ground fire. Ramsey, 51, was reported in good condition at Chu Lai military hospital.

Man Receives Two New Lungs In Major Transplant

David Christian, 48, an emphysema patient and smoker, is reported in satisfactory condition after receiving both lungs in a two day operation at Hennepin County General Hospital. Surgeon Dr John Haglin led the team and noted the donor was a 45 year old man who died of a kidney ailment. Christian and his family, from Caledonia Wisconsin, have ten children. The first lung implanted Tuesday functioned inadequately at first, with the second operation completing the transplant on Wednesday. Haglin warned of uncertain recovery prospects as global lung transplants remain rare and often short lived.

Soft financial regulations set for judges

The Judicial Conference, the rulemaking body for about 500 federal judges, eased rules on reporting income from off bench activities. Judges will report fees from lecturing, board service, writing, and similar work but not income from investments. Reports, due June 30 and December 31, are public in clerk offices. The new standards last until a new ethics code by an ABA committee is ready.

Gravel to oppose Carswell Supreme Court seat

Alaska Senator Mike Gravel announced he would vote against confirmation of Judge G Harrold Carswell. His decision leaves 29 senators opposing or leaning against Carswell while 52 back him, with 18 undecided. Gravel cited Carswell's civil rights record and past white supremacist pledges.

Nixon proposes $2500 college loan guarantee for needy students

President Nixon calls Congress to enact the Higher Education Opportunity Act to provide needy youths with loans up to 2500 per year for college. The plan links grants and subsidized loans, offers up to 20 years for repayment, and defers interest during study. A National Student Loan Association would issue low interest loans guaranteed by the federal government.

Grand Jury Indicts Two Riverside Students Over Isla Vista Riots

The Santa Barbara County Grand Jury indicted two former UC Riverside students, John Johnson and Michael Malloy, on assaulting a peace officer charges after mob violence in Isla Vista. Bail set at 5000 dollars. Their Riverside campus newspaper The Highlander printed their riot accounts March 2 with the headlines We Led the Revolution and Page from a Santa Barbara Diary. Chancellor Ivan Hinderaker said a state owned university car was burned during the rioting. Johnson and Malloy were not registered this quarter and disciplinary action may follow readmission requests.
