Jackson blames oil firms for doubling crude price via loophole

Sen. Henry M. Jackson alleges major oil firms use a drilling loophole to raise domestic crude above $10 a barrel while old wells stay at $5.25. He predicts astronomical first quarter profits and warns of equipment shortages unless new reserves are opened. A Federal Energy Office official says the loophole would yield at most a few cases.

FTC probes food industry to curb antitrust power

The Federal Trade Commission launches a broad study to assess competition in food retailing processing and production from meat poultry produce grains to farm brokers. FTC Chairman Lewis Engman says the effort may rival energy investigations in scale and scope. Shultz to resign as Treasury secretary in May
