Soviet reports new border clashes with China on Damansky Island

Tass said Chinese troops attacked Damansky island on the Ussuri River for a second day with artillery and mortar fire. Soviet and Chinese statements gave no exact casualty figures but described five hours of fighting with Soviet guards killed or wounded. Moscow warned of grave consequences and pledged a crushing reply.

Warsaw Pact summit opens amid Sino-Soviet tension

Warsaw leaders led by a seven man Soviet delegation arrived in Budapest for a one day summit on March 2 border clashes with China and the Czechoslovak invasion. Attending are state heads foreign ministers and military chiefs from the seven pact nations.

Communists Mount Heavy Offense in Three-Week Drive

Sixty five shellings rocked towns and Allied camps marking the end of the third week. Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces attacked Marines near the DMZ and American positions guarding Saigon outskirts. Ten Marines died and 40 wounded in a camp clash two miles south of the DMZ. Seventeen Viet Cong were reported killed elsewhere. At the hamlet level, nine rural communities were struck with 15 civilians hurt and six kidnapped. US figures count 350,000 South Vietnamese peasants losing government security in two weeks.

Dam model display travels wide in yearlong tour

A scale 5 by 12 foot relief model of the Lompoc area dam and reservoir marks its one year anniversary tomorrow. Shown since unveiling at the Knights of Columbus Hall it has toured to Sacramento the state capital, Santa Barbara venues, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Disneyland Anaheim and the Pentagon. The model highlights a proposed water conservation and flood control facility by the Bureau of Reclamation for the Santa Ynez River southeast of Lompoc. A feasibility study is under final review to decide if the project will proceed.

Braun Recommended for Lompoc Library Board Seat

The Lompoc Library Board recommends Karl Braun to fill the unexpired term of Luella Keyes after her resignation. Braun, a pharmacist and former Friends of the Public Library president, agreed to serve pending city council approval. The council meets Tuesday night.

Lompoc School Trustees face crisis budget decisions

Lompoc Unified School Board will review 1969 70 budget plans including a 1.25 permissive override tax and 60 276 in program cuts to cover a 762 000 deficit. Proposals divide first 1 million net income between teachers and classified staff with 80 83 percent to teachers and 19 17 percent to classified personnel.

Campus disruptions ease at three universities amid ethnic studies push
