Local planner blasts state over Gaviota traffic hazard

Robert C. Lilley of Lompoc accuses state authorities of allowing a dangerous traffic situation at Gaviota as the county planning commission delays action on a $750,000 Macco Corp tourist complex. He cites trucks parked on highway shoulders near the Gaviota store and cafe, urging safer passage at night and in fog.

Bridge at 3th Street Opens March 24 to Ease Traffic

Officials announce the two lane temporary Bailey bridge at 3th Street will be completed March 18 with approach roads finished by March 24. Traffic congestion on H Street is expected to diminish when the 13th Street bridge opens. A permanent 13th Street bridge is under construction after floods washed away nearby bridges, with replacement plans due this week.

Maj Gen Gerald W Johnson to Command Local Division

Maj Gen Gerald W Johnson will take command of the local Strategic Aerospace Division on April 1 at Barksdale AFB replacing Maj Gen Paul K Carlton who moved to SAC. Col George Pfieffer serves as acting commander until Johnson arrives. Johnson, born in 1919 in Kentucky, is a WWII ace with 16 air to air victories.
