California Senate bills authored by Republican Fred W. Marler Jr. would end open dump burning by June 30 1971 and bar most agricultural burning after December 30 1971. Exemptions apply to home burning. a three year phase out for nonconforming orchard heaters is included with a study funded to find alternatives to burning.

Perry Mason creator Erle Stanley Gardner dies at 80

TEMECULA California UPI Erle Stanley Gardner creator of Perry Mason the famed fictional lawyer died Wednesday at his home aged 80 after being treated at Riverside Community Hospital for an undisclosed illness He wrote more than 100 detective and western stories and dictated thrillers to seven secretaries drawing on 25 years of courtroom experience He did not spend more than 30 minutes drafting a plot.
