Mrs. Smith resigns from city planning commission

Helen Smith has resigned from the city planning commission citing personal matters. The City Council is not expected to formalize the resignation until the regular meeting on March 18. Appointed January 3, 1967 to fill a vacancy, her term would have ended June 30. During two years she worked on rezoning and county cooperation. Remaining holdover commissioners include William Fick.

Primary battle looms between Alioto and Unruh

State Chairman Roger Boas urged a peaceful outcome to a likely 1970 Democratic primary clash between Assemblyman Jesse Unruh and San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto. He warned a hard fight would hurt the party as Reagan appears set for a second term. Boas advocated resolution to avoid divisive infighting.

Koreans fire on U.S. men near Panmunjom clash

North Koreans opened fire with machineguns across the demarcation line near Panmunjom, triggering a two hour exchange of fire. There were no U.S. casualties. Communist losses were undetermined. The incident occurred during a scheduled Korean Military Armistice Commission meeting and involved both sides firing hundreds of rounds.

Millions strike in France as demand for wage hikes rises

Nine million workers walked out in a 24 hour general strike across France affecting gas, electric, rail, subway, bus, taxi, airline, mail, schools, industries, and media. Demonstrations in Paris and Marseilles demanded up to 12 percent raises while De Gaulle's government warned of franc instability.

House Republican Leader Ford said the House will back Nixon’s decision on the antiballistic missile system. Senate opposition stiffened as three top scientists warned that deploying the Sentinel ABM would worsen the arms race and not improve security. Senator Case planned to arrange a meeting between the scientists and Nixon aides.

Communists Hit 40 Allied Bases in Third Phase of Offense

Soviet backed gunners shelled 40 Allied bases and Hue as the third phase of a winter offensive began aimed at Saigon. Two heavy ground attacks struck bases near Saigon with fierce fighting at Land ing Zone Grant. 104 Communist dead reported. Intelligence officials warned of possible attacks on Saigon as early as Sunday or Monday.

Artillery duels erupt across Suez amid UN ceasefire collapse

Israeli and Egyptian artillery clashed along the Suez Canal from Port Said to El Qantara in heavy shelling. Israel said Egypt rejected a UN ceasefire and vowed retaliation, while both sides built up troops along the canal. Acting Israeli Premier Allon warned of a strong reply if Egypt renewed aggression.

Lompoc Planning Commission backs county lot split for annexation

Lompoc Planning Commission approved a county proposal to split a 40 acre parcel into four 10 acre units east of the city near Highway 246 and Sweeney Road with a plan to annex to Lompoc and direct access from Highway 246 to Sweeney Road. The body also deferred several items including a temporary farm labor office, river channel straightening, and county airport master plan review amid ongoing studies.
